Janine Jarman is one energetic dynamo—she’s a celebrity stylist; founder/owner of Hairroin Salon in Hollywood; the West Coast spokesperson for Sebastian Professional; and a member of the five-person Sebastian Design team. Jarman’s clients aren’t the only celebrities in her salon though—she took a turn in the spotlight herself in 2010 as a contestant on the Bravo reality TV show, “Shear Genius.” Hairroin was born out of Jarman’s vision for a unique ‘un-salon’ committed to the absolute mastery of hair artistry—a place where fashion-forward industry types working in front of behind the camera can get inspired looks.
Do you believe a woman in the professional beauty industry can “have it all?” And, what does that mean to you?
“I do believe a woman can have it all! “All” is different depending on whom you ask though. For me,it’s having balance between home and work,as well as growing year by year. It’s also the blessed and content feeling that only pushing yourself can achieve.”
In the pursuit of “having it all,” what sacrifices have you had to make, if any?
“I try my best to constantly remind myself there is no great reward without great sacrifice. It’s what separates us in this world. I guess one of the biggest sacrifices I madewas whizzing through my 20s and not having much of a social life.Also,I’m not totally in charge of my schedule. If there is an award show or something that coincides with a social obligation, I often have to decline the fun event to work. I also work long hours in order to squeeze it all in. I’mgratefulI have a patient and understanding husband,family and friends.
If we were looking through a scrapbook of your life, what would be your favorite page?
“It would have to be my wedding day. I never thought I would get married—honestly,I didn’t think I could squeeze one more thing in, let alone find someone who could put up with my demanding schedule. But Matt Wolcott swept me off my feet and helped me find some much-needed balance.”
If we were looking through a scrapbook of your life, what page would you want to rewrite?
“The first few years where I did alot of traveling for my career and never extended my stay. I was so work-focused. I always tell my siblings and staff to travel when they’re young—heck, always travel!”
What’s your favorite tool or strategy for maintaining balance in your life?
“My strategy for balance is therapy, Sundays off and extra curricular activities like gardening and cooking.”
What’s the best advice anyone ever gave you, and how did it change your life? “It was from Donna Federiciwhen I was 19. She asked me if I wanted to know the key to success (um, yeah!). She said it was “communication.” It sounded so simple at the time, but every day I try to be a better and better communicator, to remove emotion from decisions, to operate a salon with complete transparency, and to remember to tell the people in my life how important and special they are to me. It turns out “communication” is hard work. But at the end of the day, if every thing goes to crap, at least no one is surprised, and you are not to blame because you told them how it is and how it was going to be.”
What wisdom would you share with a young woman entering a career in the professional beauty industry?
“Never stop learning and growing. Keep an open mind and a humble heart and always work like a warrior. Don’t be afraid to fail. Without the downs there is no up to measure. Save 20 percent of your money, pay your taxes, get health insurance, and take vacations.”
What keeps you up at night?
“How can I be a more effective leader? Am I setting the right example? What new strategies can we put in place to become more effective? What more can I be doing to further my brand and myself? When should I have a baby? When can I squeeze in some husband time? Did I take the dog out to pee? Did I remember to water the vegetable garden? What am I going to make for dinner tomorrow? Just to name a few.”
What makes you feel powerful?
“Hearing a compliment about how wonderful the salon and staff is when they don’t realize I am the owner. It makes me know it’s all working.”
What’s the best thing anyone’s ever told you about yourself?
“That they think I will be a good mom. I really admire great working mothers such as my own, and it is my hope that I can to live up to the compliment.”
What do you hope to achieve in the next five years?
“I hope to open another location, expand our Hairroin education program to reach other hairdressers besides our own, increase the Hairroin branding and our online presence, and own a building.”
