Everyone can feel the sting of soapy products slipping into their eye, and it’s certainly not a pleasant feeling. That’s why some products are designed as “tear-free,” because they do just that if shampoo happens to drip into the danger zone.
Most tear-free beauty products contain numbing-agents (lidocaine, procaine) within the formula to anesthetize tear ducts so that you don’t feel any pain or irritation. Not the healthiest option.
On the other hand, pH-balanced products act the same way in the sense of a pain-free slip-up, but because they actually won’t sting your or your clients’ eyeballs. Now, time for a little science lesson:
“First and foremost, it’s important to understand what pH is and what it stands for,” says CMO of MOP hair care products, Austin Baskett. “pH expresses the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a scale where 7 is neutral, lower values are more acid, and higher values are more alkaline. The pH of pure water is 7. In general, water with a pH lower than 7 is considered acidic, and with a pH greater than 7 is considered basic. The normal range for pH in surface water systems is 6.5 to 8.5, and the pH range for groundwater systems is between 6 to 8.5.”
Purposely, MOP’s Pear Shampoo, for both children and adults, has a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5, which is very close to water. As a result, it generally doesn’t cause irritation or tears if it gets into eyes.
Aside from protecting eyes, it also soothes the scalp. The shampoo contains Aloe which is known to repair dead skin cells on the scalp and sooth irritated skin. Aloe is also a great conditioner and leaves hair feeling smooth and shiny while preventing itching on the scalp.
