Hairstyle trend: The beach wave

Sandra Bullock promoting The Blind Side on Jay Leno, Kate Hudson cheering at the World Series, Miley Cyrus in her chart-topping Party in the USA video--all are sporting the hottest texture trend to hit fashion, music and Hollywood scenes--the Beach Wave. This new, loose, undefined, soft, undulating wave is reminiscent of the look you get after stepping from the ocean and the hair forms a soft, subtle, natural wave.

5 Questions for Luis Alvarez

If you could interview any professional salon leader, who would it be and what would you ask? We invited Cindy Landa of Estilo Salon and DaySpa in West Des Moines, Iowa, to play reporter. She picked Luis Alvarez, vice president creative of Aquage. Here’s part of their conversation:

Stop salon products sold at drug stores

Each time one of your clients stocks up on beauty products at the local drug or grocery story, that’s money out of your cash register. You may feel powerless to fight it, but you’re not. We invited three industry leaders to weigh in on:

A Computer Program that Reduces Emissions

An Australian company has launched a new program to reduce emissions created by the world’s billion-plus computers through its new computer carbon offset software. Little Green Genie (LGG) calculates how much energy is used by a computer, and then uses this information to buy a proportionate amount of carbon credits to offset the use.

Year-End Musts

As 2009 winds to a close, take time to reflect on what works and what doesn’t in your salon. Invite input, assess and evaluate, draw up your plans, and be ready to usher in new policies and programs with the New Year. For example, now is a great time to:

Breathe In, Rock Out

Creating Team Synergy

"Have you met the new front desk girl?" says Stylist #1. "Seriously? Another new person at the front desk? This just means more mistakes in my book," responds Sylist #2. Then Stylist #3 adds, "I don't understand what's so hard about working the front desk!"

Marketing for the 2K10 Decade

Congratulations! You have survived the "00" decade. Maybe not in the style you and your team expected, but nonetheless, you are survivors. It began with the Y2K scare that kept us home because we were afraid the planes would not fly and our computers would crash, got worse with 9/11, got complicated with wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and is ending with the worst recession since the Great Depression in tandem with the deepest political divides ever experienced, as evidenced by the current health care debate.

How Consumers Think

Have you ever walked into a hotel room, tossed your key card somewhere, and a few seconds later forgotten where you put it? The data just vanishes from the brain's hard drive. Why? Because our brains are simultaneously processing all kinds of information—what city or time zone am I in, how long until my appointment, when is it time to eat? With a limited capacity of our short-term memory, the location of the room card just doesn't make the cut.

The Year of Change

2009 will be remembered as the year the rules of business changed. The year began with the economy in the throws of the worst global recession on record. Business leaders were being pummeled by one ugly piece of economic news after another. Unemployment was soaring, financial institutions were crashing, automakers were on life support, and the government was doling out bailout and stimulous money like Halloween candy. Simply put, consumers and businesses alike initiated a lock-down on spending.
