When the stay-at-home orders are lifted and clients begin returning to the salon and spa, treatments for stress and relaxation will top the list of needs. Many spas around the country have found success with treatments that incorporate CBD. Find out how its being used.

For thousands of years, spas around the world have used natural remedies for everything from stress to improving the condition of skin and hair. This has been no different with cannabidiol, which has been making a splash in the wellness industry. Since most people go to a spa, for one thing, relaxation, the cannabinoid has been a big hit in spas across the United States.
What is CBD? A Quick Review
The cannabis plant is chock full of beneficial compounds called cannabinoids. One of the most well known is tetrahydrocannabinol, abbreviated as THC. It is the most prevalent compound in cannabis and is psychoactive. Cannabidiol, abbreviated as CBD, is the second most prevalent. This non-psychoactive compound has proven beneficial in relieving inflammation, aiding in the relaxation, and relieving pain. There is also some evidence that it can help treat conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
Is It Legal?
As long as the CBD is hemp-derived and contains less than 0.03% THC, CBD is legal nationwide. However, in states where cannabis is legal for recreational purposes, it is legal to use products that contain a higher amount of THC. However, for the wellness industry, full-spectrum hemp oil or whole-plant CBD oil is the primary ingredient opposed to oils that contain THC.
How are Spas Using CBD in Treatments
According to the ISPA US Spa Business Study, 18% of respondents have integrated CBD into either treatments or retail sales. This is more prevalent in the southwest, where CBD treatments have been available for longer and 42% of spas offer the treatment, compared to the northeast and south, where only 3% have incorporated the compound. Only 16% of day spas reported offering CBD-infused remedies in 2019.
Some facilities are finding the treatments so popular that they are integrating it into multiple treatments. For example, the Sundara Inn & Spa in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin CBD oil massages were so popular, they expanded their menu. They now offer Lavender Lemongrass CBD manicures, pedicures, and physique treatments.
The Spa & Wellness Director at the JW Marriott in Chicago says that one of their most popular treatments on the menu is the Deep Healing Muscle Treatment. It can be added to any massage for $25. Camphor and CBD are combined to specifically target inflammation. Many guests are touting the treatment’s ability to diminish post-workout aches and pains.
Massage therapy seems to be where many spas are using CBD-infused products. One of the most popular offerings at the Total Freedom Wellness Spa in Prattville, Alabama is the Deep Tissue Massage using Biotone Lab+Blends CBD Massage Balm. It contains 660 milligrams of hemp-derived CBD. It is also enriched with hemp seed oil and arnica extract, allowing for targeted pain relief.
The owner of Ella Cress Skin Care in Wheat Ridge, Colorado affirms the popularity of the compound in facials. The Detoxifying Facial from Color Up Therapeutics takes a full European facial and infuses each step with inflammation-fighting, calming CBD. They also offer an exfoliating treatment through an ‘oil’ dermaplane using the brand’s signature Treatment Oil.
At the Ildi Pekar Wellness Studio, celebrity esthetician Eldi Pekar offers the CBD Vibe Facial. Starting off, the client gets electric stimulation to tighten and tone the face. Skin is then hydrated with CBD oil, followed by oxygen therapy to help balance the pH levels of the skin and encourage the production of collagen.
The owners and staff of the Spa Solage have long known the healing that mother nature provides naturally. Located in the Napa Valley, the spa has been using geothermal pools and mud therapy rich in minerals. They are now integrating Healthy Lotus CBD oil in its massages, facials, and body scrubs. The Mellow Me Out package, requiring two hours and fifteen minutes, uses CBD oil in each step of the service. The treatment includes a hair treatment, body scrub, massage, and more.
While the benefits of CBD in massage oils and facial treatments are gaining in popularity, the use of CBD in nail treatments is also making a splash. Bellacures, a Los Angeles chain of nail salons, has been integrating the compound into its services. CBD-infused products from Kush Queen are used in a bath bomb foot soak, sugarcane scrub, and massage lotion. Their “Canna-cure” manicures incorporate CBD oil into manicure and pedicure services.
Some spas are also offering spirituality inspired treatments. The Modern Sanctuary in New York offers chakra balancing, deep-tissue massage, and life coaching. Many of their treatments incorporate CBD-infused oils and balms into massages, acupuncture, and physical therapy.
