Infuse your color consultation with language that excites the client about a service, suggests Beth Minardi.

Color Guru Beth Minardi says she’s moved past the term consultation, and now conducts a pre-color interview where she either sits and turns the client’s chair so she and the client are face to face or they sit together on a couch and chair.

“It needs to be a color dialogue,” she says. “And, I’ll start the conversation by saying ‘I have a lot of ideas about your color, but tell me, why you are here today?’ Some will say they don’t know, others will go on forever, but use what she says to guide the conversation.”

If you don’t offer her something new, she’ll leave and find a salon that will. “Use the phrase, ‘Let’s keep it fresh.’ Tiny alterations in your language keep a woman’s perception about herself positive. And, constantly change up the terms to keep the dialogue interesting—talk about adding some toastier tones, hints of vanilla, pieces of caramel.”

“Part of being a great colorist is being a good actor/actress,” stresses Minardi. “You have to exude interest, enthusiasm and commitment. And, you better be damn technically competent.”
