Personal Compass: Queen of Affirmations

3 min to read

Ginger Boyle exemplifies the multiple facets of the professional beauty industry. Over the past 30 years, the owner of Planet Salon in Los Angeles has been a master stylist, educator, editorial stylist, business owner, industry icon and a prolific ‘Facebooker.’

Early in her career, Boyle was handpicked to work with Aveda founder Horst Rechelbacher and she became a popular platform artist for the company. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Glamour, Interview and Mademoiselle, as well as in professional trade publications, video shoots and television shows.

By her own admission though, Boyle is in her bliss when she is teaching and inspiring other beauty professionals. For the past two decades, she has created and sustained a culture of excellence at Planet Salon through education and a supportive environment where her team of highly trained stylists and color specialists continue to excel. Her most recent chapter includes a collaboration with her husband, beauty photographer Robert Lyndon, in creating an advanced education media that is not only modern and visually stunning, but provides a fresh approach to learning that is effective and entertaining.

And, the Facebooking?  Several years ago, Boyle found that just thinking about a daily affirmation wasn’t enough—she needed to write it down and share it with the world.  Today 5,000 friends log in each morning to get a daily social media affirmation from Boyle, and she never lets them down.

This month’s Personal Compass digs deep to see what makes this prolific talent tick:

What time is your alarm set to wake you up in the morning?
I never set an alarm. I have a strong internal clock and two dogs who get me up around 5 a.m.

What’s for breakfast?
Protein shake and fruit. Eggs on a special day.

First item you like to cross off of your list of things to do?
My daily affirmation, and my intention.

What time do you go in to the salon?
9 a.m.--we start at 10.

How much time do you spend there?
8 hours.

What’s for lunch?
Anything with almond butter or a salad.

Who do you wish you could have lunch with?
The Dalai Lama

Daily fitness ritual?
I walk every day (long dog walks) and yoga.

Biggest waste of time on a daily basis?
Cleaning up after people.

What do you do when slacking off IS an option?
Watch movies, get outside and just be.

When do you get your best ideas?
Mornings and conversations with my husband. (He inspires me.)

Tell me something that would surprise me about you.
I lived in the mountains for several years with no electricity or running water by choice.

Cat, dog, both, or something else?
Dogs! Rocky and Frenchie.

Do you cook, and what’s your favorite meal?
We plan at least three home cooked meals a week.  Vegetables, fish, and wine.

How do you unwind?
Wine, book, and meditation. Whichever is needed.

Cameras to remember the place and time...

What do you want to come back as in your next life?
A dog.  I learn how to be better every day because of mine. They are enjoying the good life—they just watch me feed them, brush them, pick up after them—what’s not to like?

Boyle's friends Frenchie and Rocky.
