Amy Pal, Whip Salon

Amy Pal inside one of her Whip Salon locations in Connecticut, embraces the thrill of change and the exciting ride of salon ownership.

Let's cut to the chase: I'm buzzing with excitement about the beauty industry right now. It is evolving at an exhilarating pace, and I'm genuinely energized by the possibilities it presents. It's my firm belief that salon ownership, in this moment, offers a level of excitement, empowerment, and strategic manageability unlike any we've seen before. If you’re a salon owner, you should be pumped, not drained!

The reality is that this is truly a remarkable era for salon owners. We now have access to technological tools that would have been game-changers just a decade ago, social media platforms that provide direct connections to potential clients, and review platforms that when used right can effectively showcase our best work.

I’m a member of several salon owner forums online where all I see is salon owners lament and complain. So, if you’re one of those business owners who are feeling overwhelmed rather than empowered, let's explore how to shift your perspective, formulate a plan and embrace the opportunities that are right for you.

Grab the Reins (and the Spreadsheet!)

Historically, salon ownership often meant a star stylist "graduating" to the business side. But here's the truth bomb: if you are now a salon owner that does not pay close attention to your financials, you're driving blindfolded. So, before you dive into bells and whistles, you must master your money game. Know your supply costs, rent, stylist commissions, and, most importantly, your revenue. If you're not tracking your weekly, monthly, and annual income and setting targets, you're playing catch-up. Seriously, get a grip on those numbers and protect your bottom line like it's the last bottle of your favorite hairspray. Once you've got that solid foundation, then you can have some fun.

Because it really is fun to utilize the tools that are out there to create a thriving business! You just have to figure out which ones work best for your salon company. Recently, a brand new team member that I was onboarding shared with me, "I chose Whip Salon because it was the most modern salon around. I was blown away by how thoughtful and forward-thinking everything is. It felt like a place that's truly on top of its game." That compliment? It was pure gold. It validated all the hard work and proved that creating a modern, engaging salon not only attracts top-tier clients, but talent too. So, what are you waiting for?

Staying Current: The Key to Salon Longevity

So, you've got your finances in order. Now, let's talk about staying relevant. If you're still doing things "the way we always have," it might be time for a serious salon intervention. Let's tackle three crucial areas that should be part of your every day: online booking, social media and reviews platforms.

Tech Transformation: Online Booking Isn't a Luxury, It's a Necessity

Yes, I said it. If you think your appointment book is too "complicated" for online booking, you're missing out. People want instant gratification. They want to book from their phones, at 2am, while wearing their pajamas. Stop clinging to the landline; it's 2025.

And no, sending an email or DM doesn't count. We're talking seamless, instant booking. If you haven't embraced online booking yet, make this your year. And if you have, kudos! But don't rest on your laurels. Do quarterly audits. Test your system. Make sure the stylist booking order is logical, that clients can book appointments within a reasonable timeframe, and that all your latest services are available. Your goal? Make it ridiculously easy for clients to visit.

Pro tip! Implementing a robust online booking system goes beyond simply adding a button to your website. It's about creating a user-friendly experience that mirrors the personalized service clients receive in your salon. Consider integrating features like automated appointment reminders, real-time stylist availability, and detailed service descriptions. Analyze your booking data to identify peak hours and popular services, allowing you to optimize your scheduling and staffing. Remember, a seamless online booking experience not only attracts new clients but also enhances loyalty among existing ones. There are many options to choose from so do some research to create a short list and set up demos to evaluate them. You’ll know when you find the one that’s right for you because you’ll recognize that it’s going to be a game changer for you and your clients!

Social Media: Your Digital Stage (and Talent Magnet)

If your last Instagram or TikTok post was in 2023, let’s have a chat. Social media isn't a chore; it's your superpower. It's how you reach new clients and attract amazing stylists. Remember, Gen Z and Millennials gravitate towards Instagram and TikTok as their primary visual search engine—not Google. That's right, they're scrolling for their next stylist, not typing into a search bar. So, showcase your incredible work, tell your brand story, and get in the game. In this day and age, you no longer should be sending your stylists out to pound the pavement with business cards to scare up business.

Pro tip! Social media is more than just posting pretty pictures; it's about building a community and fostering engagement. Develop a content strategy that showcases your salon's personality, highlights your stylists' expertise, and provides valuable information to your audience. Utilize a mix of visually appealing photos, engaging videos, and interactive stories to capture attention. Run targeted ads to reach specific demographics and track your analytics to measure the effectiveness of your campaigns. Remember, authenticity is key. Share behind-the-scenes glimpses of your salon, celebrate your team's achievements, and respond promptly to comments and messages. These efforts are not for vanity, they truly go a long way.

Reviews are our Friend: Embracing Five-Star Feedback

Reviews aren't the enemy; they're your biggest cheerleaders. Instead of fearing them, embrace them. Ask your clients for reviews—at checkout, via email, or by text. You'd be surprised how many people are happy to share their positive experiences. Consumers rely on reviews for valuable information. And, now AI also helpfully summarizes your reviews for your potential clients when you search. They are crucial and they are not going away. Stylists may be found on social media, but they are validated by reviews.

Getting your Google My Business to the top of the search results will bring a flood of new clients. And remember, a 5-star rating with three reviews isn't as compelling as a 4-point-something with 400 client reviews. Authenticity and volume matter.

Pro tip! Managing your online reputation is an ongoing process that requires attention and responsiveness. Regularly monitor your reviews across various platforms and address any negative feedback promptly and professionally. Encourage your stylists to actively engage with clients and solicit reviews after each appointment. Leverage and share positive reviews in your marketing materials and on your website to build trust and credibility. Remember, online reviews are a powerful form of social proof that can significantly influence potential clients' decisions.

The Bottom Line: Staying Current Is Not Optional

Salon ownership is an adventure, not a chore. Embrace the tools, the technology, and the opportunities to create a lasting connection with your team, your clients and your wider community. Stay ahead of the curve, and you'll not only survive but thrive and cultivate a thriving salon that resonates with authenticity. Now, go out there and create a space where magic truly happens.
