It's natural for job seekers to look for positions with competitive salaries and a nice complement of benefits, but the one thing workers say contributes most to their job satisfaction may be something they can't ascertain through the interview process--they want strong leadership.

A recent study from the real estate data company Clever Real Estate, found a majority of workers (56%) would choose to take a salary decrease if it would guarantee they'd be happy at work--including 1 in 6 (16%) who says they'd take a pay cut of $20,000 or more.

The top factor that contributes to job satisfaction is good leadership (61%), but approximately 75% of employees are frustrated with their managers.

Nearly 1 in 5 employees say they experience personal attacks or unkind remarks from their managers. Additionally, 20% of workers say their managers tear down their confidence during performance reviews.

The top reasons why employees are frustrated with their managers, include:

  • Unclear communication (31%)

  • Micromanagement (27%)

  • Favoritism of other employees (27%)

Employee experience proves that "people don't quit companies, they quit their managers." Great leadership is worth more than a high salary to most employees.
