When Incorporating green elements into salon design, most salons opt for cork flooring, compact fluorescent light bulbs and the like—but the Lilly MaRitza Hair Design & Art Studio in Ellicott City, Maryland, takes “reduce, reuse, recycle” to an entirely new level.

“We’ve integrated a recycled green aviation theme and implemented it in a high-end industrial space,” says managing partner Mike Rudden, who also works with the MotoArt design group. Rudden and his team salvaged parts from airplane “boneyards” and reverse-engineered them to fit into the salon environment. Among the decor elements are recycled Boeing 737 galley carts for styling stations, and the mirror behind the front desk is designed with parts from a Vietnam War-era TBM Avenger fighter jet. “All these planes now have beautiful new life to them, and to my knowledge, there’s no salon with design like this anywhere.” Plus, good news for the avid collector: Most of the pieces, along with unique artwork displayed in the salon, are for sale.
