Thirty-seven years ago, Joseph Jeffrey launched his eponymous salon and grew his legacy business until his passing from Covid-19 in 2020. In loving tribute, his son Jeff Fabiano, daughter Shannon Gaffin and granddaughter Bobbi Crescenzo designed the new salon to feel as though guests were being embraced in a hug.

Soft lighting and a warm color palette of tan and delicate greens visually communicate this embrace. “We want every client who comes through our doors to still feel the essence of what our father built,” Gaffin says.

The trio’s biggest design challenge was in maximizing the salon’s existing space and making it feel larger without actually increasing the square footage.  “We wanted an open, airy feel and we did this by elevating the ceiling, removing the existing walls and creating an open concept where guests could see all the way to the natural stone wall in the back,” says Fabiano. “The wall is a focal accent piece that represents the warmth and harmony mirrored in the family atmosphere and vibe of our staff.”

Instead of independent stations, the salon furniture company Collins helped the owners design cabinetry around the workstations to reflect the salon’s streamlined, sleek vibe. Tucked away but still easily accessible, the wall cabinetry features soft-close drawers of various sizes and depths to accommodate tools, products and the clients’ personal belongings, so nothing protrudes into the salon and everything continues to look fresh, clean and flush.

“One of our favorite features is the new bar station in the color processing area,” Gaffin says. “Many of our clients work from home now, and they are able to schedule hair appointments during traditional work hours—this space allows them to work remotely from our salon while their color is processing. That has dramatically increased our afternoon traffic in addition to creating an attractive new area in the salon.”

The improved shampoo stations also are a client favorite. “We chose to float our now-larger shampoo bowls, and the ergonomic chairs are wider and more spacious, allowing for a more elevated shampoo experience,” Fabiano says.

The space is filled with different textures that add to the embrace—from the cozy wooden mirrors to the brick over the stations and warm basket-style lighting down the center of the salon. “Overall, I am absolutely obsessed with it,” Crescenzo says. “I think we were able to capture the family aspect through the design of the space, but also because the family literally is here working day in and day out—both our immediate family and our staff whom we consider our second family.”
