The building Jenna Bowden and her husband bought at the height of the pandemic wasn’t a former salon or even a business, it was two apartments stacked one on top of the other. While it wasn’t totally apparent how the 100-year-old building would eventually become a salon, it was the perfect opportunity to invest in a piece of property in an up-and-coming area and give Crown Extension Studio a permanent home.

Today, stepping into Crown Extension Studio is stepping into a luxurious, yet comforting new world. Jade-colored tile walls and tones of deep greens and blues invoke a feeling of health and vitality that calm the soul. The soft-touch cabinetry and gold shelving units are both timeless and elegant.

“When guests walk in, they are standing below our chandelier which represents a crown of jewels,” Bowden says. “Walking between the two extension islands, they notice the carefully organized luxury products in their cream-colored boxes on the right, and a library of hair extensions that you can touch hanging almost like a curtain between you and the styling stations along the wall.”

A smiling extensionista welcomes each guest, takes her coats and draping her with a black, peach-skin robe. She’ll lead the guest to her seat in one of the camel-colored Italian leather styling chairs and fetch her a glass of the house signature drink, a Crown Peach Mimosa.

Gold, arched mirrors mimic the arch that leads from the hallway to the bathroom. Granite countertops extend all the way across the stations. “There is no separateness, as the space is designed to invoke teamwork and community,” Bowden says. “You’ll often see two extensionistas working on one client, which is not something you see every day in most salons.”

Beyond the gold curtain is the shampoo area where globe lights are dimmed to create a soft glow and the music quiets. Guests feel calmer as they are encouraged to put their feet up and are warmed with a hot towel scalp massage.

At the end of the service, instead of paying at the front desk, the extensionistas brings the new guest a welcome gift box full of goodies, including a silk pillowcase, hair brush, scrunchies and hair clips, all in Crown signature green and perfectly suited to their new extensions. Then, the client is checked out via an iPad, while she stays seated sipping the rest of her mimosas, wishing she could stay longer.
