With plans for Mirror Mirror’s new flagship in a new development in Austin, Texas, Owner Martha Lynn Kale experienced both the challenge and the opportunity of designing her dream salon from the ground up.
“Once we saw how tall the ceilings would be, we recognized the opportunity to incorporate a mezzanine, which turned out to be our most unique feature,” she says. “We partnered with our long-time architects, DesignTrait, to figure out how to make the idea of a mezzanine a reality.”
The resulting lofted space now houses the salon’s office, a large meeting room, and a lounge space with a television and comfortable chairs where guests can relax or read a book. “For the team, it’s a true luxury to have so much space to collaborate with one another, host events, or just take a respite from the busy salon floor,” says Kale. “We are also really proud to include two private rooms where guests can nurse or take a private phone call. We use the mezzanine as a flex space to host community pop-ups, and on any given week, you might catch our team doing one of many celebrations upstairs—we celebrate everything at Mirror Mirror.”
The mezzanine is just one of the design features the new salon is celebrating. The space’s abundant natural light and open layout contribute to the space’s bright and cheerful atmosphere. The salon’s design has a definite feminine touch, with its ‘blush’ tones, curved wood pieces, and brass and gold accents, yet it remains welcoming to both male and female guests.
“Our reception area is comfortable, but intimate, because running on time is important to us at Mirror Mirror,” Kale says. “The small seating area boasts a blue sofa and slate gray chairs that invite clients to relax with a glass of wine, coffee, or tea before their service begins.”
The restroom is one of the team’s favorite areas. The open communal space and four private restrooms are decorated with breathtaking pink marble, tile and wallpaper. A ‘cloud’ selfie mirror provides a space for everyone to “LOVE what they see in the mirror.”
The salons’ stations are custom-designed with white oak cabinetry, spacious counters, charging stations, and dual sides for storage for multiple stylists. Cleverly designed, the 19 stations can accommodate up to 33 working stylists simultaneously. The mirrors are backlit with flattering warm light while overhead lights support the work of the salon’s colorists. Overall, the salon floor has ample space and remains pristine.
When it is time, guests are escorted to a stunning shampoo area, where comfortable bowls and chairs await, accompanied by calm, warm lighting in the salon’s signature pink, and a neon sign that reads ‘LOVE what you see.’
Beyond its structural elements, Kale considers the salon’s energetic and welcoming environment another significant design feature. “Our use of vibrant colors and dynamic patterns in the décor, coupled with a well-designed layout, creates a lively and upbeat ambiance,” she says. “This is further enhanced by carefully chosen music and the lively chatter of satisfied clients.”
Custom touches like branded signage communicate Mirror Mirror’s identify. Strategically placed from the reception area to the styling stations, the prominent display of the salon’s logo creates a cohesive and professional look.
