Strolling through the space you might catch a live photo shoot in the lofted photo lab, teams brainstorming in the creative collaboration and storyboarding rooms, or a class in progress in the open-concept classroom in the New Artist Salon.

The salon portion of the space holds 24 stations and 9 shampoo bowls, as well as a luxurious lounge area with a library of fashion, design and art books. “While the salon is primarily used for clients and education, it also doubles as a versatile event space,” says David Wagner. “Since opening, we have hosted a number of events, including fashion shows, music and community events, as well as classes with world-class educators.
The events are supported by the intentional design of the space, which includes a stage, theater lighting and professional sound system. “We have been able to host audiences up to 350 people and look forward to inspiring events in the future.”
Visually, the salon comes alive sunlight, plant life and inspired architectural elements. “The building has a long history of industrial uses, such as a car dealership in the 1920s, a music video studio in the 1980s and most recently, an advertising agency,” Wagner says. “In designing the salon, we wanted to honor this long history of creative workings and keep an open concept, featuring many industrial elements, including the original flooring. We also looked at ways to soften the space with bespoke rugs and handmade lighting fixtures from Morocco, crystals and our curated retail space.”
The space caters to increased productivity by being centered in a densely populated urban area that is home to several colleges, small businesses and residents. “Our location and reputation provide consistent new and returning clients for our artists,” says Wagner. “Most importantly, it produces between 40-50 artists each year, which directly supports our other JUUT Salonspas in the Twin Cities area as each artist is eventually placed into a ‘home salon’ upon graduation from our training program.”
