3 min to read

At this year’s Premiere Orlando attendees will have several opportunities to learn from Sam Villa’s Andrew Carruthers, including two different hands-on workshops, Leave the Length and Chops & Crops. We connected with Carruthers to learn about what inspires him and drives his success.

What can attendees expect from your presentation at Premiere Orlando?

Carruthers: We will be working on highly requested looks from longer shags to pixies as well as solving challenges that hairdressers face every day in the salon.

What is the main takeaway you would like attendees to get from your presentation at Premiere Orlando?

Carruthers: A sense of confidence and inspiration that they can handle anything that their salon guests can throw at them!

What beauty tool/product, do you think needs to get more love & you completely changed the game?

Carruthers: It’s all about texture right now so we are super into our new Artist Series Slide Cutting Shear!  It is way too much fun to work with and creates beautiful texture so easily.

Best advice you could give to your fellow artists?

Carruthers: Play nice!  We’ve seen a lot of bad blood through social media in the past and the good news is that it already seems to be changing towards the positive.  We are so much more impactful as a cohesive community and that’s why we’ve been really pushing the #ArtistsSupportingArtists mission through our social… there is room for everyone.

Favorite current trend?

Carruthers: Two words… Modern Shag… we can’t get enough of this mega trend.

Best advice you have ever received?

Carruthers: A rose is not beautiful because its perfect… it’s perfect because it’s beautiful.

Who or what is your biggest motivator?

Carruthers: The every-day hairdresser… the person that stands behind their chair with pride to make a living and support their family.  They drive us to do everything we do at Sam Villa!

Can you offer advice or tips to someone trying to get into the education side of the business?

Carruthers: Get your foot in the door… maybe that means volunteering time to do guest artist spots at your local beauty school or getting involved with your favorite product line.  Everyone has to start somewhere so be ready to get your hands dirty and jump in at the base level.
