It may have been the aesthetic beauty of Las Vegas’ Square Colour Salon and Spa that caught the eyes of judges for the 2012 North American Hairstyling Awards judges who the salon the 2012 NAHA for Salon Design. But as a working stylist, Owner Barb Garcia-Grove mostly focused on productivity, efficiency and the comfort of guests and staff when she designed the space.

“My favorite area is the color room—it has 68 private lockers for color, and is designed with two entrances with restaurant-style sliding doors you can open even if your hands are full,” she explains. “The stainless steel surfaces help with cleanup, and I love that the touch-faucets in the sinks in the islands are designed to be community-based, because I’m very passionate about keeping us together as a team.”

On the salon floor, Garcia-Grove created an ideal working environment with Minardi Perfect Lighting and Freestyle Drying Systems, while colorful artwork and whimsical lighting enchant and entertain staff, as well as guests. “I have a friend who is a lighting vendor so we were fortunate to score some phenomenal deals on lighting fixtures,”she says.

“It’s a very bright and cheerful space, and it has an energy and vibe that is very powerful,” says Garcia-Grove, who admits that when it came to opening the salon, the timing was right for her and her husband, Rick Grove. “Vegas took such a big hit with the economy and a lot of people thought we were crazy to open a new business. But, finally a great lease came up that we were able to afford—we took a leap of faith and it’s paid off.”
