The 60-Second Hair Loss Test
A recent study published in Archives of Dermatology that aimed to determine how much hair loss is normal indicates that males who are not experiencing male pattern balding will lose 10 or 11 hairs when they perform the following test:
1. Before shampooing, comb your hair for 60 seconds over a pillow or sheet of contrasting color. Do this by repeatedly pulling the comb from the back top of the scalp forward to the front of the scalp for 60 seconds to dislodge resting hairs.
2. Count and record the number of hairs in the comb and on the pillow or sheet.
3. Repeat the procedure before three consecutive shampooing sessions, always using the same comb.
If your male clients find that this routine causes more shedding than about a dozen hairs, they probably are experiencing some hair loss. The study does not address women's hair loss. However, industry statistics say nearly half of all women experience hair loss by middle age.
"Studies we've done on the number of women vs. men experiencing hair thinning indicate only a marginal difference, no more than 10 percent," says Trevor Attenborough, vice-president of marketing for Nioxin. "The bigger difference is that only 30 percent of men say they're going to do something about it-most just accept that it's genetic-whereas 100 percent of women are motivated to do something about it, and salons have unique access to women and women's hair."
