The State of Tipping in 2022

At most salons, spas and barbershops, gratuities are just a part of the service, but tipping etiquette varies by service industry and by generation. A new study of more than 1,000 Americans by PlayUSA.com analyzes the state of tipping in America in 2022.

When look at workers that are among the best tipped, hair stylists and barbers rank high at 74%, right behind wait staff at restaurants with table service and food delivery workers.

Findings include:

  • 95% of Baby Boomers tip, compared to 84% of both Ben X and Millennials and 74% of Zoomers
  • 1 in 3 Americans tip regardless of good or bad service (68% based their tip on service)
  • More than half of Americans fee pressure to tip when prompted by an iPad at checkout
  • Only 39% of Americans tip at coffee shops, and are less likely to do so at chains like Starbucks

And how much are American’s tipping?

  • At sit-down restaurant, 64% of Americans tip 20% or higher.
  • 17% of Americans are tipping less due to inflation.
  • 23% plan to tip more during the holidays this year, 26% say the have tipped more since the pandemic.
