As September was Alopecia awareness month I think it’s important that we dive even deeper into the world of hairloss, pass Adrogenetic Alopecia and Alopecia Areata, two causes of hair loss that I discussed in my last blog.
Before you can really take my hair loss challenge and help your clients experiencing hair loss, we need to discuss and educate ourselves on the less common forms of hair loss that are plaguing our clients.
1. Anagen Effluvium.
Anagen Effluvium is the medical term meaning hair loss and is caused by medications that are administered into the body. The primary cause is chemotherapy. These agents poison the hair follicle causing hair loss. Hair can grow back, but sometimes is long-term.
2. Involutional Alopecia.
Involutional Alopecia is due to a natural aging process. The hair follicle becomes dormant and the hairs that are left become shorter and sparser.
3. Telogen Effluvium.
Telogen Effluvium is temporary, generally lasting three to six months. It’s caused by a sudden stress or illness that shocks the system causing hair to fall out during one period. This can be triggered by a variety of emotional or physical stresses including mental illness, rapid weight loss, poor diet, surgery, anemia, death of a loved one, thyroid abnormalities, excessive amounts of vitamin A or blood pressure medication, and hormonal changes due to pregnancy, birth control or menopause.
4. Traumatic Alopecia.
Traumatic Alopecia is caused by overusing the following: damaging styling products, extensions, braiding techniques, tight rollers, commercial relaxers, hot irons and combs. When a person overuses any of the listed products it can severely damage hair and lead to loss.
The last two reasons include Friction Alopecia and Cheerleading Alopecia. Consistent friction from tight hats, wigs, and ponytails can cause breakage in the hair causing the follicles to fall out.
Now that you understand the different types of alopecia, do you feel like you are ready to live up to my challenge? Go out and help your clients. Trust me, it might feel weird bringing it up, but in the end they will thank you and appreciate your honesty and helpfulness. . Please feel free to contact me or read my blog at JeffreyPaulBlog.com if you have questions!
