Great Clips, one of the world’s largest salon brands, has been ranked #13 overall and #1 in the Hair Care category in Entrepreneur magazine’s Franchise 500 the world’s most comprehensive franchise ranking. Recognized as an invaluable resource for potential franchisees, the Franchise 500 ranked Great Clips for its outstanding performance in areas including unit growth, financial strength and stability, and brand power.

“We have always appreciated and embraced the incredible value in a 100% franchised model, and this past year strengthened our opinion that a franchise model is paramount to our joint success moving forward,” said Steve Hockett, CEO of Great Clips, Inc. “This recognition by Entrepreneur affirms that belief, and we appreciate the opportunity to share this with our franchisees.”

The key factors evaluated by Entrepreneur include costs and fees, size and growth, support, brand strength, and financial strength and stability. Each franchise is given a cumulative score based on an analysis of more than 150 data points, and the 500 franchises with the highest cumulative scores become the Franchise 500® in ranking order.

“2020 was a challenging year for everyone, but it was also a year of unusual opportunity,” says Jason Feifer, editor in chief for Entrepreneur. “Franchises were able to be nimble and innovative, serving the needs of franchisees and customers in ways that will resonate for many years to come. We believe that, when we eventually look back on this time, we’ll see it as a moment when many brands defined themselves for the future.”

Innovation has also played a big role in Great Clips’ success, especially this past year. The Great Clips Online Check-In app has been downloaded 14+ million times since 2012 and usage has increased significantly during the pandemic. Great Clips also introduced the ReadyNext text alert system in 2020, which notifies customers once their wait time reaches 15 minutes. This service enhances the customer experience, while allowing Great Clips to minimize the number of customers in and around salons, an essential feature to enable social distancing.

Over its 42 years, the Franchise 500® has become both a dominant competitive measure for franchisors and a primary research tool for potential franchisees. A brand’s position on the ranking is a testament to its strength as a franchise opportunity.

The Invisible Work of a Rebrand

In this rare essay, the president of a haircare brand takes us behind-the-scenes into a world we never see when we pick up a product off the shelves--the arduous, thought-probing, second-guessing journey of rebranding a legacy product line.
