The proud team of Avanti Salon in Boston, Massachusetts.
Avanti Salon, one of Boston’s premier destinations for hair and beauty, is proud to announce its 50th anniversary—marking half a century of creativity, talent, and small business excellence on Newbury Street. Founded in 1975, Avanti Salon has grown into a Newbury Street institution, known for its trendsetting style, commitment to artistry, and dedication to client satisfaction.
As the salon celebrates this incredible milestone, it continues to thrive in the heart of one of Boston’s most iconic neighborhoods.
“For any business to reach 50 years is an accomplishment—but for a salon in the ever-evolving world of fashion and beauty, it’s extraordinary,” says owner Stephen Alex Iacobacci, who has led the salon for more than 20 years. “Originally from Boston’s Little Italy, the North End, I’m proud to have been part of Avanti’s journey and even more proud of the community we’ve built.”
Avanti Salon is one of the largest salons on Newbury Street, with a team of 30 hairstylists offering a full spectrum of services. Under Iacobacci’s leadership, the salon has become a launchpad for some of the industry’s most talented stylists—many of whom have gone on to open successful salons of their own.

An historic image of Avanti Salon.
The salon remains committed to education, creativity, and growth, offering both timeless service and cutting-edge techniques. Over the years, Avanti has proudly supported local and national causes, including participating in HairCares—a Newbury Street initiative that brings together salons to support individuals and families affected by HIV. HairCares was founded by Avanti’s original founder, Sally Drinkwater, and continues to embody the spirit of giving back that she instilled in the salon from day one.
Giving back has long been part of the Avanti ethos, as has fostering talent within the beauty industry. The salon has helped shape the careers of dozens of stylists, many of whom have remained with the salon for decades.
One such stylist is Nancy Walsh, who joined Avanti in the 1990s and has built a remarkable career working with elite clientele. “Avanti has always been more than just a salon—it’s been a home and a creative hub,” says Walsh. “I’ve had the honor of styling the New England Patriots cheerleaders, competitors for USA Gymnastics, and even Tipper Gore when she visited Boston during Al Gore’s presidential campaign. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ve been lucky to share it with this team.”

Notably, Avanti Salon holds the distinction of being the oldest salon on Newbury Street originally founded by a woman, and it continues to thrive under the leadership of Stephen Alex Iacobacci. Through changing trends, economic cycles, and an evolving cityscape, Avanti has remained a steadfast symbol of excellence, resilience, and innovation in Boston’s beauty industry.
“Avanti has always been about more than just hair—it’s about people,” adds Iacobacci. “Our team, past and present, has shaped what we are today. This anniversary is a celebration of their work, our loyal clients, and the city of Boston.”
With 50 years of heritage and a passion that remains as strong as ever, Avanti Salon looks ahead to the next 50 years—continuing its commitment to beauty, community, and excellence on Newbury Street.
