When personal computers first hit the market, followed by salon management software, then corporate websites, the professional salon industry might not have been the fastest to embrace these new technologies. But when social media provided new visual avenues for beauty professionals to showcase their work, as well as connect with their clients and each other, the beauty industry jumped in, pedicured feet first.

When it comes to adopting the latest technology, we know beauty professionals have come a long way, but at MODERN SALON Media, we were determined to find out just how big a role it plays in the everyday lives of hardworking salon owners and behind-the-chair service providers. With generous support from SureTint Technologies, MODERN SALON Media’s research department launched a groundbreaking study in late spring across two distinct audiences: the owners and managers of employment-based salons and working stylists/colorists, including independent contractors. There were 805 qualified respondents who completed the survey, with 344 representing owners and managers, and 461 representing stylists/colorists.

“Technology has been the game changer for so many industries, and now the professional beauty industry is experiencing the efficiencies and benefits of adopting new technologies,” SureTint’s CEO Michael Wright says. “SureTint is at the forefront of salon technology and software development and, as such, we were excited to partner with MODERN SALON Media and SALON TODAY to better understand the use of technology and the mindset of salon owners, managers and stylists. Providing specific and relevant data in this emerging category benefits everyone and helps define the needs and wants of our clients.”

In addition to giving us a glimpse of technology use in today’s salons, this survey will establish important benchmarks regarding the industry’s use of technology. While we’ll be focusing primarily on the owners’ responses in this story, we’ll be providing a lot more data, and insight into the data, over the next few months across all our media platforms, especially at salontoday.com.
