Owners agree that one of the most important steps in developing an A-team is hiring the right kind of people to begin with. So we asked Frank Gambuzza, Kez Broad and Courtney Costello what their favorite interview question is and what kind of response they are looking for from job candidates.
Kez Broad
Co-owner of Noggins in Ridgeland, Mississippi
WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT NOGGINS?
“We like to ask candidates how much they know about us first, such as we’re known for precision haircutting education. The positive response is a well-informed answer about our culture. A negative response is someone explaining they don’t know anything about us, it shows a lack of prep work.”
Frank Gambuzza
Co-owner, Salon Visage in Knoxville, Tennessee
WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU? WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU POSSESS THAT WOULD MAKE YOU A SUCCESS HERE?
“It’s the last question I ask. We expect them to sell products and services and prebook clients. They should at least be able to sell themselves. What I’m looking for is a quiet confidence. Someone who is sure of themself, but doesn’t make unsupported claims about how good they are.”
Courtney Costello
Co-owner of Cortello Salon in Jacksonville Beach, Florida
WHAT THREE THINGS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR IN A SALON?
“The answers I’m looking for are a ‘great team environment, education, and growth and success.’ By the time I am doing the interview, it’s usually the candidate’s second or third interview. At this point, I expect them to know about our salon, our culture and who we are. How and what the candidate responds tells me if they truly know what they are looking for in a salon, if they have done their homework about what Cortello stands for and if this will be the right long-term fit for them.”
