Bright blue pedestal chairs cozy up to the Barbie pink front desk that was designed to look like a retro bar. A large neon sign with the salon’s name hangs behind the bar on the massive wall of shiplap with alternating boards stained in pastel shades of blue, pink, yellow and green. Owner Karolyn Henao repaired and refurbished a pink, retro refrigerator that adds to the bar ambiance of the front desk, but actually holds cold beverages that are offered to guests.
“Directly across from the front desk we created a playful yet beautiful waiting area,” Henoa says. “The wall behind the seating is decorated with retro hair dryers, a bar cart invites clients to help themselves to tea or coffee, and our custom-made chandelier is made up of vintage hair dryers.”
All six stations are decorated with tufted brown leather columns and feature floor-to-ceiling mirrors. Freestyle dryers are suspended from the ceiling, eliminating unsightly cords.
“The biggest challenge of building the salon was designing and executing the actual service station,” Henoa says. “We perform blowdries, manicures and pedicures, using three technicians, all at the same time. So the pedicure bowl had to have water and drainage, the manicure aspect had to be movable and the hair stylist needed to be able to move the client. We overcame these challenges by building out a demo chair in our barbershop next door, seeing what worked and what did not.”
