Stacey Soble with Tom Porter
Malibu C's Tom Porter talks about the natural forces over summer that impact hair—from minerals in the water to heat to higher levels of chlorine to the drought—and how that can reshape the way salons think about the back-to-school promotion.
Salon of Distinction: Fringe
I love Fringe’s interplay of colors and textures flowing from the gorgeous focal ‘brick’ wall to the floor to the rich styling stations.
Jan Hillenmeyer with Trevor Attenborough
Trevor Attenborough, who has been named president and general manager of Kao USA, Salon, and spoke to News Editor Jan Hillenmeyer about his new position.
Grand-Prize Winner: Ginger Bay Salon and Spa
AT FIRST GLANCE, the interior of Ginger Bay Salon and Spa in Town and Country, Missouri, simply reads gorgeous.
First Runner Up: Shin
WHEN SHIN AN MOVED to Chicago from her hometown in Wisconsin in 1993, she met architect and designer Suhail and was immediately inspired by his passion and creative vision.
Second Runner Up: Bespoke Hair Artisans
WHEN LISA WILLIAMS named her salon, she was inspired by the English tradition of “bespoke” tailoring, a term coined after a group of London tailors who created custom designs for each client.
Third Runner Up: Roca Salon & Spa
RHONDA AND ROD CAVNER admit they take a little secret pleasure in observing new clients as they come into Roca Salon and Spa.
Salon of Distinction: Van Michael Salon, Sandy Springs
“We always communicate with our clients through e-mail and social networking sites such as Facebook. Our tagline for this project was, ‘Everyone needs a make-over.’”
Salon of Distinction: Trilogy Salon
“One of our favorite features is a vintage barn door on a sliding rail that separates the front reception area from the styling area. One of the owners found inspiration for this idea from a door on a beautiful Mexican hotel while on her honeymoon.”
Salon of Distinction: Strands Studio for Hair
“The biggest challenge about our space was the long narrow unit. I strived to avoid a bowling alley look, by dividing it into areas separated by walls of mosaic tiles and tumbled stones and using accent lighting to create an open space.”
Salon of Distinction: Sine Qua Non Salon, West Town
“We celebrated our grand opening with a huge event which invited all the local press and magazines, which was a great success and earned us reviews in Refinery29, Allure, Time Out and more. We also held a blogger breakfast, hosting all the young fashion bloggers.”
Salon of Distinction: Salon Entourage
“One of our favorite features of our salon is the ultramodern black and white color scheme with chrome trimmings, which allows us to add a touch of color seasonally. The epoxy white floors give it a seamless modern touch.”
