In 1999 he relocated to New York City, joining the Paul Labrecque Salon team in 2005, where he now serves as Salon Director. The salon is finding success --for stylists and clients, alike--offering scalp care and specialized treatments. MODERN spoke to Moine about how this focus meets an important need and drives client loyalty.

MODERN SALON: When delivering a head spa or scalp detox service, what details separate a good experience from an exceptional one?

FREDERIC MOINE: The difference between a good experience versus an exceptional one is in the analysis and diagnostic of the scalp. That's about really understanding the needs of the client so I can target and address any issues in both the scalp and hair. This is part of the highly individualistic approach and great care I take with each person who sits in my chair.

My favorite treatment to perform and customize for clients is the Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 Capillaire Purifying Hair & Scalp Treatment, which is especially wonderful to help regulate excess oil, and to help lightly exfoliate and purify the scalp. It really makes a difference!

MS: How do you read and respond to your client cues throughout the service to ensure both comfort and results?

FM: I want each client to have a very relaxing time with me, so I try not to talk during the massage time that's part of any treatment or service. I make sure the levels of comfort; pressure and pressure points are enjoyable for them. At this time, I also encourage my client to put away the cell phone to help eliminate distraction.

MS: Which aspects of scalp technique (sectioning, pressure, rhythm, or product application), do you believe stylists most need to master? Tell us where you trained, was it Paris?

FM: When the incredible Biologique Recherche educator team comes in to train myself and my colleagues at Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa in NYC, they always tell us, "There are no miracle products. Each product has a specificity, and it needs to be applied according to proper protocol," and then tailored to each individual's specific needs.

MS: What immediate and long-term outcomes should clients expect from the service?

FM: Be prepared to leave Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa with hair feeling extremely clean and lifted. You'll also notice more volume and plumper strands even a few days after sitting in my chair.

MS:  Does offering a scalp detox service help build client loyalty and encourage regular return visits?

FM: These offerings are great add-ons for any client at Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa, or otherwise. I have seen these services bring in new clients and help retain them.

You might be surprised to know that really only a few salons offer top-tier services in this category. Clients are savvy and demanding, as they should be, and Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa attracts a well-educated client who expect customized services that truly enhance and produce real results.
