5 Questions for Van Council

We invited Peggy and Dave Sinibaldi, owners of the David Anthony Salon & Spa in Lorain, Ohio, to be the reporters. They chose to interview Van Council, owner of Van Michael Salons in Miami Beach, Florida, and Norcross and Atlanta, Georgia. Here’s part of their conversation:

Sinibaldis: What are you doing to keep your salons thriving in this economy?

Van Council
Council: Our numbers are actually up a couple of percentage points from last year. I think the reason we are able to keep growing is because of our strong dedication to our education program. This allows us to teach the Van Michael culture to our staff and to make each visit to our salon worth talking about by consistently offering amazing customer service.

Sinibaldis: How do you keep staff motivated?
Council: Again, I would say education is helping with our motivation. Within the past few years, for our company meeting alone, we have hosted Tim Hartley, Robert Lobetta, Antoinette Beenders and Vivienne Mackinder. This type of talent in a small environment keeps our staff engaged with not only the world of hair but the world of fashion and creativity as well.

Sinibaldis: What do you do to keep yourself motivated?
Council: I stay motivated by always wanting to be on top. We are the market leader and we did not get here by resting on our reputation, we got here because we are constantly building our reputation. The drive to be on top keeps me motivated in all aspects of my life.

Sinibaldis: How do you manage multiple salons while making sure they stay true to your vision?
Council: Managing multiple salons is not a challenge as long as you have all the right people on the bus in the right positions, and the driver knows where they are going. A strong management team that understands our culture and will help cultivate it in their work everyday is what we strive for in our salon.

Sinibaldis: Do you have a passion for something outside of the industry?
Council: I am an avid mountain biker. This past year, I was the Georgia State Champion and also participated in La Ruta de Conquistadores, a race across Costa Rica from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico over four long days.
