“Giving back makes you a happier healthier person, gratitude gives you a tremendous amount of energy, and both allow you to make an incredible impact,” says Ronit Enos, strategist and performance coach. It is a way for salon and spa owners to connect with their community and build strength as a team.

Anna Walsh, owner of Lola Hair Studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was one of the big-hearted salons that participated in the 10th Annual HAIRaising event on April 28th that has raised over $1,000,000 to date!  Hundreds of salons take part in this one-day cut-a-thon to raise money and awareness for Boston Children's Hospital

“The Lola team really loves to do this event.  It’s a very rewarding experience for us to be able to give back to such an amazing charity and do what we love, which is make people happy and feel beautiful.  It empowers each team member, strengthens our bond as a team and fortifies our connection with our community,” explains Walsh.

Enos was thrilled to join the Lola Hair Studio team for the 2nd year.  “Shelley Lewis Waln, president of Federici Brands, introduced me to the foundation and it really spoke to me, now we are part of it as Salon Cadence through our clients.  We get to give all day long to children, there’s not a better way to spend your day!” adds Enos, who also happens to be a past Salon Today 200 honoree for Philanthropy.

Enos suggests every salon/spa owner find a way to give back for the following reasons:

  • It makes you feel happy, happy people make happy salons and communities
  • It evokes gratitude and a readiness to show appreciation and return kindness
  • It’s contagious, causes a ripple effect in the community

Walsh offers these tips for coordinating a cut-a-thon:

  • Set a specific block of time to help drive traffic
  • Suggest a set amount for a donation for each cut and blow dry (for those not interested in a cut)
  • Ask affiliates to donate products for a raffle (Oribe and Goldwell donated for Walsh, as well as the Boston Red Sox and Museum of Science)
  • Offer a service as a raffle prize (Walsh does a free blow-dry a month for a year)
  • Ask local businesses to donate food for the day (YumBunny of Belmont donated cupcakes and Flour Bakery donated Lola cookies for Walsh)
  • Play fun music, wear fun colors and enjoy the day!

Giving back is easy – if a cut-a-thon is not an option, donate a percentage of sales to a designated charity, offer complimentary salon services to those in need, and/or research charities that relate to hair; Hair to Stay and Wigs and Wishes.
