“What professional, outside of your own staff, has done the most to drive your business?”

Besides the online seminars I have attended on business practices, I would have to say the woman who helps me with my local advertising has been the most valuable outside resource. She makes sure that I am targeting the right audience.

A salon coach—they see both sides of the business and put that perspective in a presentation that makes you see what is best for the business. We love it, and absorb it. All salons, if they want to be successful, need a salon coach. They stand on the sidelines and give the best direction. Go team!

To succeed, we all need another set of eyes and good advice. Our salon and spa looks for guidance from networking with other salons that have earned the reputation of being successful. I am a member of Intercoiffure, which consists of many owners who have walked the walk, so I call on them for advice and I share my advice with them as well.

My two favorite outside sources for salon advice are Strategies and Kopsa-Otte, CPA and Advisor Services. I have been using Strategies services for several years and their trainings have really helped set me up for success. I have had growth and profit every year since opening 10 years ago.  It has been a huge benefit for me to know where my finances are and Strategies has helped me understand the good, bad and ugly of salon finance, leadership and management. I also have greatly benefited from the services of Kopsa-Otte to take the burden of ‘doing it all’ off my shoulders.

I am confident that I’ve been able to maintain my salon only because of the coaching I received from Julie Shepperly of Milady.

I have an easy way to stay aware of my numbers through spreadsheets and a system in place to coach and monitor my team on their numbers. It keeps everything objective and not subjective! I’ll admit my cash flow is very tight, but if I didn’t have the awareness I would be far worse than I am now. The good thing is my numbers are showing improvement since the beginning of the year.

My salon coaching experience has been through the program Strictly Business.  The partnership and way of life have given my salon the culture necessary to have bottom line growth through this recession.

Our business has benefited more from the professionals on our staff than outside professionals.

As your salon finishes out this year, it’s time to start making plans for the next year. This month, we ask, “What’s your biggest goal for 2010 and how do you plan to accomplish it?” E-mail your ideas to Alison Shipley at ashipley@vancepublishing.com, and your voice may appear in the January/February issue of SALON TODAY.
