If the success of blow-dry bars has proven anything, it’s that cut and color aren’t the only lucrative services for salons: styling is a huge opportunity to keep things fresh and earn more money.
“Fashion and style will continue to move with or without us,” says Damien Carney, editorial stylist, educator and creative director for Schwarzkopf Professional North America.
In his newest collection, texture takes centerstage. Carney was inspired by the ’70s and ’80s vibe happening on recent runways, and achieved it by using a microcrimper throughout the hair to create a matte finish.
“When the crimping is brushed, the hair fattens and swells, creating a pliable texture that is so easy to work with and simple to style.” Carney says he understands that not all clients will want their hair microcrimped and heavily styled. “But don’t underestimate the clients that will try,” he says.
And for the creative client who likes to play, consider crafting a structured silhouette and adding temporary spray color. “It’s fun, instant and washes out but has meaning to your clients who love to change their hair without cutting or coloring,” he says. “Women love to play with styling as it is no commitment.”
