Palm Springs spa turns 50

Built by a group of investors led by Sam Banowit, the 30,000-square-foot spa opened its doors on January 21, 1960, on a site where the first bathhouse was erected in the 1880s. Fifty years ago, it cost approximately $2,000,000 to build the spa, which included 36 mineral tubs, 34 massage/treatment rooms and two outdoor mineral pools.

At that time, the cost for a mineral bath was $3.00 and a massage was $5. Today, the legendary Spa at the Spa Resort Casino in Palm Spring maintains a deep connection to the past as a sanctuary for the mind, body and soul.

For half a century, the spa has drawn millions of visitors for a dip in the natural hot springs. This tradition evolved into the spa's modern-day signature service, known as Taking of the Waters. Today's service incorporates a journey for the senses in four therapeutic stages, including steam, sauna and eucalyptus inhalation designed to clear the body and mind of toxins. The final stage, a private soak in the natural hot springs, sends clients drifting into serenity.

On January 21, The Spa will serve 60s-themed cocktails and appetizers and offer mini spa treatments and a 50th anniversary commemorative spa gift. Guests are encouraged to dress in the style of 1960 and prizes will be awarded for the "Best 1960 Hairdo" and "Best 1960 Style."

For $110, clients may book the special package, which includes a 50-minute massage or facial, mini loofa body polish, the signature Taking of the Waters private mineral bath and a 50th anniversary commemorative gift.

For $250, clients may book the Taking of the Waters service, a 50-minute massage, a 50-minute facial, Spa Cuisine lunch, plus a luxurious 50th anniversary spa robe to take home.

During the month of January, clients may also book a 1960s-era hairstyle for $50.
