Check up on your own customer service. Ask a friend to call in and book a service, then monitor the call from another extension.
Design promotional displays worthy of high-end department stores. For inspiration, pass out disposable cameras to your staff and ask them to snap candids of displays at their favorite stores, boutiques and hangouts. Share the great ideas at the next staff meeting and discuss how they can be implemented in the salon.
Oprah did it, you can too. Launch your own book club by stocking shelves with business, motivational and self-help titles in your backroom. Invite staff members to read and review their favorites at upcoming staff meetings.
Advanced education is the one positive that can keep your staff motivated through tough times. If they’re pinching pennies, help them out by starting a salon-sponsored education fund. Set aside a percentage of product sales or consider using tuition as the reward for your next sales competition.
