Help Salon Clients Stay Heart Healthy

Hearts adorn salon windows, salon displays and gift packages in February, but this month is also a great time to educate your clients about heart health.

The American Heart Association's Go Red For Women movement challenges women to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. The movement plays a leading role in providing women with the tools they need to lead heart-healthy lives.

This is a perfect platform for many professional beauty organizations and an easy one to embrace in your own salon business. Paris Parker Salons and Spas, with 11 locations in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Northshore, Louisiana, became an official Go Red sponsor this year and will encompass a number of fun and educational activities throughout the year, including in-salon promotions, giveaways and a health and fitness educational program.

“In our industry, we have a goal to touch people and bring a positive impact to the world through beauty,” says Debra Neill, chairman of Neill Corporation, which owns the salon chain. “And our wish is to do that holistically—by how we feel, how we interact with others, how we make a difference in our community and ultimately, how we take care of our bodies.”

In another effort, Clairol Professional launches its “True Color from the Heart” contest this month, which encourages colorists to makeover their favorite client for a chance to win a trip to the Premiere Orlando Show. For the competition, Beverly Hills-based stylists Rona O’Connor, owner of the Lukaro Salon, and Jennifer J., owner of the Juan Juan Salon, created celebrity-inspired techniques. Colorists are encouraged to recreate red, brunette or blonde techniques, available at Clairolpro.com.

In addition, Clairol Professional and the True Color From the Heart program will be donating $140,000 to the cause—a collection of $.20 of each product specially packaged with the Go Red for Women logo.

With one in three adult women in the United States suffering from a form of cardiovascular disease, Go Red For Women recognizes the urgency of women’s heart disease. Use the website as an easy resource to begin sharing information about women and heart disease with both your staff and your clientele. For example, you’ll find life-saving information, including the following signs that a heart attack may be happening:

  • Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath. This feeling may occur with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs of discomfort. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
