The SALON TODAY 200, the competition that celebrates salon business success, is celebrating its 15th birthday, and you don’t want to miss the party!
When Associate Publisher and former SALON TODAY Editor in Chief Michele Musgrove first discussed the concept of honoring the fastest-growing salons in North America, industry naysayers told her it couldn’t be done. “You’ll never get 200 salon owners to share their sales figures, let alone back them up with two years of tax returns,” they laughed.
It’s a good thing she didn’t listen, because she asked and you answered. And, in January 1996, we published the first SALON TODAY 200 list of fastest-growing salons. The sales figures, the business statistics, and the essays outlining best practice ideas shared by owners were invaluable. “Because each owner who has ever completed a SALON TODAY 200 application has been incredibly generous with information and ideas, we were able to develop some of the first benchmarks for salon business—helping to raise the bar for the entire industry,” says Musgrove.
Fortunately for the ST200, time was on our side. In 1996, fast growth was the business buzz phrase. Technology was reshaping every industry, business was booming, and companies measured their success by their growth rates.
But over the past three years, the economic landscape changed, shifting the idea of success to businesses that strongly sustain over time. While growth remains an indicator of success, businesses realized it wasn’t the only way to measure succe
So for 2010, we re-invented the SALON TODAY 200, expanding the competition beyond growth to include 10 additional best practice categories. Salon owners were encouraged to enter on their own best merits, picking and choosing the categories in which they wanted to compete. The change was well received within the industry, for not only did it level the playing field for salons of all sizes to compete on their best ideas, it helped us drill deeper into salon business and share more success stories
For 2012, the competition categories include growth, compensation and benefits, retention and referral programs, customer service, recruitment and training, advanced education, marketing, environmental sustainability, philanthropy, retail and merchandising and technology.
