Karla Pelaez Barrick and Victoria Pelaez Pintal
Q. How did you get your start in the salon business?
My stylist actually suggested that I go to cosmetology school. After some consideration, I decided to follow his advice. I began at a reputable salon with a great training program. After four years or so, my sister and I were blessed with the opportunity to purchase Stilo Salon. It was the right opportunity and perfect timing.
Karla: I had been working at Stilo as a hair extensionist for about two years when the opportunity to purchase the salon was presented to my sister and me.
Q. What is your salonâs business philosophy?
We strive for complete customer satisfaction. Our business philosophy is to treat others with honesty, integrity and respect. We believe it is the only way to succeed in business.
Q. What makes your decor unique?
Our focus has always been on a color palette that would bring out the best for our clientsâ hair services. We also made sure our workstations were functional and comfortable.
Karla: After establishing functionality, we were then able to add to the fun by incorporating contemporary quality into a classic form. This was achieved by adding contrasting color to columns and trims, stimulating lighting, seasonal flowers and art.
Q. What is it like working with your sister?
Itâs been amazing. We totally balance each other out. Iâm more impulsive and creative while Karla is more business-minded and thinks things through. Where I lack, she picks up and vice versa.
Q. What are your most popular services?
Our most popular services are design cuts, color and hair extensions. However, we also offer specialized services, such as Japanese straightening, airbrush make-up and hair replacement for men.
Q. What salon events are you planning?
One event that we are excited about is working with a non-profit organization that helps women re-enter the workforce. We plan to have a day where we pamper and transform underprivileged women who are returning to the workforce. All services will be donated to the organization.
Q. What has been the greatest challenge in your business?
Taking over the ownership of Stilo. We have had to gain the trust and respect of the employees who were already there.
Q. What are your plans for the future?
We plan to help Stilo grow into its full potential by putting a lot of time, hard work and dedication into the salon. As of now, we are known primarily within the San Fransisco Bay area, but our goal is to be a nationally recognized salon showcasing all of our talent.
