Hair on the Fly: A Video by Brig Van Osten

Brig Van Osten, owner of play hair lounge in Simi Valley, California and winner of Bravo’s hairdressing challenge/reality show “Shear Genius” uses all the tools in her social media arsenal to spotlight her talented staff, her salon and her favorite products.

Recently, Van Osten, who took up a camera a few years ago as another way to express her boundless creativity, shot and edited a video of a beautiful cut and color makeover.

Hair on the Fly: A Video by Brig Van Osten Why a video? I was shooting stills of Riley's new haircut and quickly decided to switch over to film when I saw that the traffic was unexpectedly making her hair fly! I knew at that moment that I was capturing something beautiful.  The lighting was natural.  I filmed for 2 1/2 minutes.  We had to wait for the cars to get a green light and hit the tunnel and create the wind.  Riley was patient and brave.  We were standing on only three feet of sidewalk.

Were you showing off the cut, the color or just having fun?  I was out with Celeste Johnson, hair assistant and Kari LeBlanc, make-up artist, shooting Riley's brand new short haircut and brighter blonde color. I have driven through that tunnel twice a day for almost three years and have wanted to shoot in it.

How long did it take to film?  And to edit?  The entire shoot went from 1:30-5:30p.m. The 1 minute video took me about 3.5 hours to edit.

If you had to put music to it, what would you select?  Almost anything by Portishead  - Etherial, Eerie.

What’s next for play?  We are planning more photo and film shoots.   As the owner, it is important for me to expose p!ay's work to an international audience.  YouTube, Facebook, Vine, Instagram, Tumblr, etc make that all possible.  Each stylist brings a plethora of talents to our team and I can't wait to share their talent with the world!
