LISA BOTTS and CRAIG MARSHALL
This just in: the struggle isn't real and making the smallest changes often leads to the biggest results. The Straight Up workshops, conducted by beauty educator and salon business development specialist Lisa Botts and Craig Marshall, yoga monk, public speaker and personal consultant, use new personal development and business building methods to help you create the life you want to live. Registration is open for an April 23rd workshop, Straight Up: Making the Shift, at Infuse Wellness in Santa Monica, CA.
We asked Botts to share a bit about what attendees can expect to experience at this business and life-enriching event and what struggles she and Marshall will help them address.
MS: What kind of traps do you see salon pros falling into during the early stages of their career?
LB: Throughout my 30 year career with the beauty community I have been fortunate enough to have always worked with hairdressers during all cycles of their career. Just like life there are beginning points, transitional phases and ending points. What’s important is to be self-aware enough to identify each of those stages. Your career is part of your life, it’s not separate from it. The traps I see most young salon professionals falling into are:lack of clarity of who they are and where they want to go. It’s easy to get caught in an 'art trap.' but if being a hairstylist is how you make a living you’ll want to take a look at it from a different perspective. A perspective that incorporates your passion for the artistic side AND a way to make a living. The beauty of your individual life is that you are in charge of creating what it looks like. If numbers aren’t your jive, hire an accountant. Be clear on WHO you are at this phase in your career and design your life to fit it. Are you strong in cutting? Focus on that to make your money and, if you want to do color, use the haircutting money to invest in color classes. Then, when you feel confident in it…go for it. Be aware of what your strengths are and focus on those. When you focus on your focus, distraction doesn’t have a chance.
MS: And what is one technique you will share to help them course correct?
LB: In the Making The Shift workshop they will do an activity that will help give them clarity where they are now and where they want to be. It’s an eye opening exercise that will change their perspective.
MS: How can salon professionals in the middle of their careers stay energized, engaged and enthusiastic?
LB: Be aware of where you are in your life. Where your are today is where you wanted to be 5, 10 or 15 years ago. You’re a different person now. You’re more established, you’re more skilled, you’re more experienced. That’s powerful and exciting in itself. So, now what? You’ve got the next however many years ahead of you. What do you want those to look like? We’ll help you with that!
MS: Do you think that ‘creative types,’ like hairdressers, find it hard to put their business hat on? If so, why?
LB: I think it can be challenging for some, but the beauty of being a ‘creative type’ is that you are creative enough to figure things out. If you look at business, it’s really the most creative place to be. As a business person you are in charge of creating what everything looks like; your brand, your salon, yourself, your clients, your paycheck, your time off, your team. Really business is the ultimate in creativity…if you choose to see it that way.
