Why You Should Learn Extension Application

Lauren Salapatek | June 19, 2012 | 8:43 AM

Learning the art of extensions can help you expand your creativity and artistry as a hair stylist. Extensions can be used as a quick add-on service to add chemical-free color, correct a bad hair cut, add volume or fullness, and much more. MODERN talked to Tony Odisho from Tony Odisho Extensions and asked him for his advice on why stylists should consider learning how to do extensions.

Odisho's Tips:

TIP #1: The first step in making an educated decision when becoming an extension specialist is to investigate what method of extensions you will offer. Tony believes that the fusion method (with a keratin protein bond) is best because it does not damage the natural hair, as keratin (the same thing our hair is made of) expands and contracts at the same rate as our natural hair.

TIP #2: Next, you must find a reputable company with outstanding and ongoing customer service and business support. That company should also offer comprehensive, small, one-on-one classes with personalized instruction.

TIP #3: Extensions are a great revenue builder as both an add-on, and a full service. One extension client per week can yield an additional $26,000 in revenue in one year.

TIP #4: A perk of being certified in extensions: you are almost guaranteed to get a job at an upscale salon, whether you're an experienced stylist or a recent graduate. “A salon owner would be crazy not to hire someone certified in extensions,” says Odisho. “Think of all the additional revenue that stylist will bring into the salon!”
